Kiowa Wildlife Management Area

Scotts Bluff County. Located 2.5 miles south of Morrrill. Area 540 acres, of which 326 acres are closed during the goose-hunting season as a refuge. There is a large diked pool at the east end, and seasonal wetlands toward the west. A small prairie dog colony is present, and burrowing owls are regular. Canada geese nest here, and about 20 waterfowl species have been reported, including large wintering goose and duck populations. Common migrant shorebirds include Baird's, white-rumped and stilt sandpipers. Nesting shorebirds include American avocet, black-necked stilt, and probably Wilson's phalarope and Wilson's snipe. White-faced ibis and black-crowned night herons may also nest. The area is designated A Nebraska Important Bird Area.
